New Armani and Gucci Frames -- 25% off for limited time

We're excited by the arrival of new collections of ARMANI and GUCCI frames.

Armani frames, with their classic clean designs, have long been popular with our clientele.

This is the first time we're carrying the Gucci line. Each frame has a distinct, modern design and we've got a great selection to try on.

Mention this blog for a 25% discount on these frames, until June 30, 2009

To make room for the new frame lines, prices for many older models have been lowered -- now's a great time to shop for new frames.

Comparing five sports glasses (and why they're so important)

Did you to read last month's NY Times article on sports glasses?

Scientist/writer Tim Bertram explained the importance of wearing protective glasses under all light conditions -- not just to improve visibility, but to help maintain healthy eyesight and youthful appearance.

"Wearing sunglasses no matter the brightness of the sky improves visibility, protects the eyes from particles and glare, and limits exposure to the sun, which can remain surprisingly strong on even the grayest of late-winter days."

The article goes on to evaluate five of the leading sports glasses on the market, including Oakley, Nike, Giro, and Smith Optics. And Bertram's favorite?

Rudy Project's new Noyz frames, with ImpactX-Photochromatic Lens.

Bertram found the frames to be the best for low-light running: the ideal synthesis of a flexible frame and responsive photochromatic lens. "The frame was low-profile and very comfortable, and the lens was never too light or dark. If the light changed quickly, the lens transitioned to accommodate, and I never got any of the retina burn I saw with some of the other glasses when the sun suddenly intensified or I looked up into oncoming traffic."

Rudy Project makes many models, each designed to maximize performance in various sports, including bicycling, skiing, golf, tennis, etc, etc. We carry a large selection at competitive prices.

Classic frames are "back"

In recent months there's been a resurgence of interest in classic frames from decades past: small antique-like metal frames; rimless and semi-rimless styles; simple rectangular shapes in tortoise colors; and yes, the P3 (semi-round) frames popularized by John Lennon.

I've found several companies specializing in these great "old-school" frames, including some of the original manufacturers. Now in stock:

Schnuchel
Exceptional, handcrafted frames to order. German workmanship and rich tortoise colors set these frames apart.

Europtic
Classic-shaped frames with rich tortoise colors.

Color in Optics
An old friend -- one of my best-selling companies in the 1970's and 1980's, known for popular shapes and wonderful colors.

Cutler and Gross
Very bold, very English, with heavy blonde and dark tortoise colors.

L'Unique (Zip+Homme)
Exquisite, high-quality frames in stunning colors. One of our best-selling lines.

Anglo American
A venerable British company that continues to make their original classic frames. We could always count on Anglo American for classics when other companies had stopped making them.

MicroShapes
A stylish frame for smaller faces. Also an excellent choice for very strong prescriptions.

Allyn Scura
California-based company with modern versions of classic frames. Very popular in movies -- we get many inquiries from customers looking for the frame worn by Johnny Depp in Secret Window.

Are Your Frames Bent or Misaligned? We Can Help

Are your frames bent or misaligned? Is a screw loose or missing? Let us help. Bring them in and we'll fix them on the spot (no charge to clients). It's safer and more precise. Plastic frames, for example, need to be heated to bend without breaking. We have specialized tools to heat and adjust your frames, and to replace or tighten screws (those little eyeglass kits are OK in an emergency, but don’t always fit well).

Allyn Scura Frames: Exclusive Dealers on the Upper West Side

One of our favorite items in the store is Allyn Scura's line of gorgeous frames based on classic and vintage designs. They're in demand world-wide, but not easy to find in New York. Proud to say we're the exclusive distributors on the Upper West Side. Come in, try them on! The new Spring '06 line is coming soon, and we're also happy to custom order frames from their catalogue.

How to Minimize Scratches on Lenses

There's no such thing yet as a 100% scratch-proof lens. But there are products available to keep scratches to a minimum. We've assembled a compact kit of our favorite products - including spray, cleaning cloth and a "tip sheet" - that's free with the purchase of any complete pair of glasses, or available for sale at a modest cost.

New: Aspex EasyClip Frames

Just in: a new line of Aspex EasyClip metal frames with magnetic sunglass clips.

The frames are high-quality and classically-styled. And the magnetic sunglass clips are ingenious.
Many people have told us they love the idea of a sunglass clip, but found them
awkard to put on and remove. The EasyClips solves that problem.
